With Geistlich Bio-Oss®, the ridge dimensions are significantly better maintained than with a synthetic bone substitute made from hydroxyapatite and silicone dioxide. These are the results from a clinical comparative study of nine patients.
In each patient, at least three fresh, intact extraction sockets in the maxilla were treated as follows:
- 1 defect: Geistlich Bio-Oss® granules, covered with gelatine sponge
- 1 defect: synthetic material, covered with gelatine sponge
- Remaining defects: control, filled with gelatine sponge
As expected, after 12 to 14 weeks, the ridge volume had decreased significantly in the control defects and implants could be inserted in only three sites. The sockets treated with the synthetic material also showed distinct bone resorption, and implants could be inserted in only five sockets. The best ridge volume was maintained with Geistlich Bio-Oss® (p <0.05 vs. both groups). Implants were inserted in all treated sockets.
The authors concluded that the choice of bone substitute material is critical in the success of the treatment and Geistlich Bio-Oss® is particularly suitable for ridge preservation – in contrast to the synthetic material.
