Human bone has the capacity to partially rebuild itself, but in most cases this process requires assistance. Biomaterials can enhance the body’s natural ability to regenerate lost bone.
Newly forming bone needs a scaffold or structure to guide and support it during regeneration. Since being introduced more than 25 years ago, highly porous bone substitute materials have been shown to provide this needed structure. Additionally, a membrane or barrier placed over the area of healing bone has been proven to stabilize and protect the defect during healing and prevents the rapidly growing soft tissue from invading the space that should be occupied by the slowly ingrowing bone. This protective membrane also assists in good wound healing.
